Prelude to Save! Culminating

It was only a few Saturdays back when the two-day session of Save! Campaign came to an end. However, when one chapter closes, another one begins anew: Save! Culminating.

Many familiar faces – facilitators and kids alike of Save! Campaign – will be present in this half-day session held at Cervini Field within the Ateneo de Manila University. But, in order to compensate for the anticipated arrival of 120 kids from Kalumpang Elementary School, more MEcOnistas have been invited to volunteer as facilitators.

Those faces are not the only new elements present, as Save! Culminating is also a newly established effort of MEcO, under the Community Development Department. What was once a one-part project, Save! Campaign branches out and offers Save! Culminating – to be launched under the guidance of the Project Heads: Zahra Zanjani and Gayle Carabeo.

The project, as its name suggests, is the culminating activity of Save! Campaign. From the fundamentals of why to save to the basics of knowing how to save and budget, these topics that were touched on in the Save! sessions will be integrated into the culminating event. Save! Culminating will serve as an avenue for the kids to showcase their abilities, and apply what they learned through a morning-long event filled with exciting activities and a variety of engaging activities.

When asked about her inhibitions towards the event, Project Head Zahra Zanjani shares that apart from the tangible errors that could be faced, her major apprehension is whether the kids would enjoy what they have prepared. She hopes for nothing other than the activities to leave a lasting impression on them, and points out that,

Anyone can be smart with money. And [through this event] we want them to be just that.

Come and be a part of the Save! Campaign culmination this Saturday, November 5, 2016, from 8am-12nn!

These cheerful faces greeted their Ates and Kuyas from Ateneo de Manila University with a warm, rowdy welcome. Many of these kids are about to become participants of Ateneo MEcO’s Save! Campaign happening on October 8 and 22, 2016.

Save! Campaign, under the Community Development Department of MEcO, is a two-part session that aims to teach 120 Grade 5 students from Kalumpang Elementary School the importance of saving money and basic economics through fun and interactive tools. Part of this is the Save! Culminating on November 5, 2016, a half-day event for all the participants filled with exciting booths and games, where the kids can happily apply what they learned.

It’s not only the kids who are looking forward to the event, but their teachers as well.

Ms. Loida Borja, a Grade 6 Math teacher in the school, talks about the potential of the program. “Maganda siya in a sense na may awareness na sila sa financial education kahit bata pa lang. Ok rin kasi many of their families come from indigent communities.”

Noong June pa lang, I asked them about their dreams,” said Ms. Alma Centeno, their Grade 5 AP, MAPEH and ESP teacher. “Sabi ng isang bata, tutulungan niya ang mga magulang niya para ‘di maranasan nung bata pa sila, 2 times lang kumakain. Gusto niya maging pulis.

Both teachers expressed their warmest sentiments for the program. It’s a promising one, and it’s something all students, teachers and parents are all excited about.

Gusto kong makapag-aral sa Ateneo…magbayad ng pang-kuryente sa bahay…mag-aral ng Business Ad…”

They budget their baon of 30 to 70 pesos a day, for their merienda, tricycle fare and anything they need to buy for the day! They also shared their wish list once they have saved enough: “Books for animals. Pang-tuition. Bahay ni Mama at Papa”

“Mayroon po kaming mickey [mouse] bank…minsan [naman] iniipit [sa] wallet!!”

Some have already tried saving amounts from their baon, but of course, they still need to be taught the proper and right way to save!

These two also have their own wish list for the future: “Malaking bahay… Makapagtapos…Regalo para sa apat na kapatid.”
